Windsong’s humanistic approach to pedagogy is inspired by the educational philosophy (known as Waldorf or Steiner education) of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Anthroposophy. Learning is interdisciplinary, integrating practical, artistic, and conceptual elements. The approach emphasizes the role of the imagination in learning, developing thinking that includes a creative as well as an analytic component. Our philosophy’s overarching goal is to provide young people the basis on which to develop into free, morally responsible, and integrated individuals. Schools and teachers inspired by the Waldorf approach are given considerable freedom to define curricula within collegial structures. The first U.S. Waldorf school opened in 1928 in New York City and, as of 2011, there were 998 independent Waldorf schools located in 60 countries throughout the world.
